Why a Womens' Soccer Team? The Story...

In Memory of Julius Bontilao

A few days into a new school year.......Where is Julius??? I taught him in 4th grade and this is very odd to find him not in my 6th grade class. I inquired from the principal, where was Julius?
I was called him and broken the news that Julius, during the summer, had been diagnosed with stage 4 cancer. He would return to school as soon as he could. I was not prepared to see how much Julius had changed in appearance so rapidly in just a few months. What to do to make this school year easier on Julius and his classmates and his went through his treatments???
I called every Bay Area sports team for help. Only the San Jose CyberRays, a professional womens' soccer team, was willing to help. And help they did....for Julius, for Julius's parents, the 6th graders and myself. The team came out to the school and presented Julius with their championship cap. The entire class was invited to every single CyberRay game. Julius was made team captain one game. His classmates were able to work out on the field with the CyberRays before the game. Julius 's family was treated to an afternoon in the Manager's box seats. The last game of the season, Julius was presented with Sissi's game worn jersey. The CyberRays made a very, very difficult year, easier. Julius graduated that year in complete remission. I can't help think the CyberRays were part of that remission.

Another year, I remember what the CyberRays did for all of us and I had in mind another child that had no connection, no respect for women at all. Once again....the CyberRays come to mind and the idea of CyberKids....Respect for All was born.

What happened to the CyberRays?

I am sad to report, due to the financial status of the entire WUSA League, all teams were disbanded as of October 31, 2003. There is hope for the future that a league will be formed by the year 2005.
I was happy to find that San Jose State University Womens' Soccer team would gladly take over for the CyberRays in this project.

There is hope that the United States will once again have a soccer team. The WUSA hopes to come back in the year 2005.

The CyberRays players have all gone different places. Some are now playing on the United States National Womens' Soccer team. Some are on the California Storm. Other have gone off to coach college teams.

Sissi was honored by receiving Humanitarian of the Year Award from the WUSA for her work with Julius.

Sadly, I was to find out that Julius went out of remission two months into the following school year and passed on two months later. At his rosary I was sadly standing next to his mother and briefly, for just a moment, a smile lit up her face as she said to me, "I couldn't give it up. The one thing.....the jersery. I kept it."

Yes, the CyberRays made a difference in the saddest event a mother could ever face.
